Prahlad A Saga of Unyielding Faith and Divine Triumph
Prahlad, in Hindu mythology, is a central character in the Bhagavata Purana, one of the sacred texts of Hinduism. Once, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu who had gained immense power through his austerities. With his newfound strength, he became arrogant and believed himself to be invincible. He demanded that everyone in his kingdom worship him as a god, forbidding the worship of any other deities, especially Lord Vishnu.
However, Hiranyakashipu’s son, Prahlad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu from his birth. Despite his father’s warnings and threats, Prahlad continued to worship Vishnu with unwavering faith. This devotion infuriated Hiranyakashipu, who tried various ways to change his son’s beliefs.
Shanda and Amarka were the demon teachers appointed by King Hiranyakashipu to indoctrinate Prahlad into abandoning his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Shanda and Amarka were well-versed in demoniacal knowledge and were instructed by Hiranyakashipu to teach his son the ways of the demon clan, suppressing any influence of Lord Vishnu.
Shanda and Amarka, who were very stern disciplinarians, with strict injunctions that Prahlad was never to hear even the name of Vishnu mentioned. The teachers took the Prahlada to their home, and there he was put to study with the other children of his age. But the little Prahlad, instead of learning from his books, devoted all the time in teaching the other boys how to worship Vishnu. When the teachers found it out, they were frightened, for the fear of the mighty king Hiranyakashipu was upon them, and they tried their best to dissuade the child from such teachings. But Prahlad could no more stop his teaching and worshipping Vishnu than he could stop breathing. To clear themselves, the teachers told the terrible fact to the king, that his son was not only worshipping Vishnu himself, but also spoiling all the other children by teaching them to worship Vishnu.
Despite their efforts, Prahlad remained steadfast in his devotion to Lord Vishnu. He refused to be swayed by the teachings of his demon teachers, demonstrating his unwavering faith and devotion. Shanda and Amarka’s futile attempts to influence Prahlad highlighted the purity of Prahlads devotion and his unshakeable belief in the divine power of Lord Vishnu.
Hiranyakashipu attempted to poison Prahlad by lacing his food and drinks with deadly toxins. Despite these attempts, Prahlad remained unharmed, as his devotion to Lord Vishnu provided him with divine protection. The king Then ordered powerful elephants to trample Prahlad under their feet. However, when the elephants charged at Prahlad, they miraculously avoided harming him, as if an unseen force shielded him from their . He then ordered another attempt on his life, Prahlad was thrown off a high cliff. Despite the fall from a great height, Prahlad survived without any injuries, once again protected by the divine intervention due to his unwavering devotion. He again tried to kill him with Snake Poisen. Snakes were unleashed upon Prahlada to bite him. However, these snakes refrained from harming him. Prahlads faith rendered the snakes harmless, and they slithered away without causing him any harm.
Hiranyakashipu’s soldiers attacked Prahlad with sharp swords, aiming to put an end to his life. Miraculously, the swords failed to injure him. Prahlad stood unscathed, his faith creating an invisible shield that protected him from the lethal blows.
Hiranyakashipu subjected Prahlad to harsh treatments, placed him in the midst of dangers. Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, had a special power – she could enter fire unscathed. Hiranyakashipu, seeking to get rid of Prahlad, devised a plan. He ordered Holika to sit on a pyre with Prahlad on her lap. Holika, confident in her power, agreed. Prahlada remained calm and devoted, trusting in Lord Vishnu’s protection.As the pyre was lit, a divine intervention occurred. Due to Prahlads unwavering devotion and Lord Vishnu’s grace, a gust of wind blew, protecting Prahlad and engulfing Holika in the flames. Holika was burnt to ashes, while Prahlad emerged unharmed. This event came to symbolize the victory of faith and devotion over evil intentions.The story of Prahlad and Holika is often celebrated during the Hindu festival of Holi. People light bonfires, known as Holika Dahan, to signify the triumph of good over evil and the importance of faith and devotion.
One day, Hiranyakashipu confronted Prahlad and asked him where his Lord Vishnu was, challenging his existence. Fearlessly, Prahlada replied that Vishnu was omnipresent, even in the smallest atom. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu pointed to a pillar and asked if Vishnu was present there. Prahlad affirmed Vishnu’s presence in the pillar.
At that moment, Lord Vishnu manifested himself in the form of Narasimha, a fierce half-man, half-lion incarnation. He emerged from the pillar and attacked Hiranyakashipu at dusk, which was neither day nor night. Narasimha placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap, tore apart his demon body with his lion claws, and killed him. This form of Vishnu, as Narasimha, symbolizes the divine intervention that protects his devotees.
