Once, there were two powerful demons named Chanda and Munda. They were allies of the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha, who were wreaking havoc in the universe. These demons were causing destruction, terrorizing the gods, saints, and innocent beings. Seeing the plight of the world, the gods approached Goddess Parvati (Durga) for help.6
In response to the gods’ plea, a tremendous burst of energy emitted from Goddess Parvati’s forehead, creating a fierce and powerful goddess – Kali. Kali’s appearance was terrifying, with her dark complexion, disheveled hair, and a garland of skulls around her neck. She was adorned with a skirt made of severed arms and a necklace of demon heads.
Kali, the embodiment of divine wrath, set out to confront the demons Chanda and Munda. A great battle ensued between the mighty goddess and the demons. Kali fought fearlessly, displaying her immense power and prowess. With her sword and her divine anger, she swiftly defeated the demons’ armies.
